School Dismissal - New Updates April 16, 2020

GRADUATION: Graduation activities for the Class of 2020 will be established by student body officers, school administrators, and student advisors. Each high school will announce its plan for graduation ceremonies/activities the week of April 27. For any questions, comments, suggestions relating to graduation, please contact the student’s school.

GRADING: Today faculty received guidance for grading practices for 4th Quarter 2020. It is important for the education and mental health of all students during this time of school dismissal for all students to stay engaged in learning. There are no adequate, equitable or valid grading rubrics to address all of the unusual circumstances our students may be dealing with. Our main guiding principle is to do what is best for students.

  • There will be no grades for all elementary students in Tooele County School District (grades K-6). Teachers are encouraged to focus on student skills and strengths/weaknesses for report card purposes.
  • The following will be the grading practice that will be adopted by all secondary teachers in Tooele County School District (grades 7-12):
    • Students who STAY ENGAGED, regardless of their actual performance, will receive an “A” grade in the class. In order to receive an “A” grade, students need to STAY ENGAGED with learning activities provided by their teachers. All students who are engaged in the learning activities will receive an “A” grade or 4.0 of 4.0.
      • The definition of STAY ENGAGED means consistent submission of assigned work at best effort.
    • Students who are NOT ENGAGED due to not participating in learning activities or lack of submission of any assignments will receive an “I” or “Incomplete” grade in the class.
      • After 4th Term, “I” grades will be converted to “C” grades or 2.0 of 4.0 on the student’s transcript and the “I” will be removed (with some exceptions listed below).
      • “I” grades may be made up to qualify for “A” grades within a 30 day make-up period after May 21, 2020, (June 21, 2020), if efforts are made to complete and submit work.
    • No “D” or “F” grades will be given for the 4th Quarter 2020.

OPHIR CANYON: All Ophir Canyon Education Center camping and community/outdoor education classes are canceled through June 30, 2020.

DRIVERS ED: Road time for Drivers Education students will be canceled through June 30, 2020.

BORROWED LAPTOPS: Please contact the school if a student needs to retain their checked-out mobile devices through the summer months.
