A meeting was held on Tuesday, October 15 to discuss spending the extra Trust land money that is available. Lacey Thomas brought to our attention a conference being held in Provo in November for a minimal cost for our staff. The Community Council members decided to use $100 for the extra money to pay for the two teachers and two paras to attend.
A discussion was held whether to put the additional money into books for the kindergarten classroom or technology. It was decided to explore both avenues. If we cannot obtain any new computers with the additional funds, it will be used to purchase the First Books. The Trust land paperwork will be completed and submitted by October 31st.
Those in attendance were - Donilyn Leary, Tammy Rigby, Rachelle Walker, Lacey Thomas, Amee Mandelin, Cami Johnson.
A community council meeting was held in conjunction with Back to School night. There were many parents and staff available for suggestions and comments. Because of a conflict of interest, Angie Holden was replace as the chair. Scott Livingston is now the chair person and Rachelle Walker is the Vice-Chair. We also added Lacey Thomas as a parent member.
The school recently hired Angie Holden to work as the Trust land Para. We are excited to have her. We have an excess of money available because of carrying over from last year when we lost our Para. There was discussion at the meeting about how to use the funds beyond what will be needed for the Para. It was suggested that the money be used to have the Para come in on Wednesdays to progress monitor students on DIBELS. There were also suggestions to look at our math and reading programs to see if any additional supplies were needed that would be beneficial to the students. The teachers agreed to look into whether additional items were needed. The community council will meet and discuss options before the October reporting date.

All students made significant progress. Discussion was held on the reading program this year. Things were changed and students were required to set new higher goals in reading. This will make the students work harder and more efficiently to reach their goals. tentative plans were discussed for the next school year and what will happen if we lose our aid that is funded by the Trust land money. All present were in agreement that we would like to continue hiring an aid to work with students on reading and math.
Our community council met on March 18, 2012. It was proposed and decided to continue using the money the school receives from School LANDTrust to pay for a Para-educator to help with reading and math at the school.
The community council met on Thursday, January 24. The members of the community council present were Mrs. Leary, Mrs. Rigby, Mrs. Livingston, Angie Holden (chairman), Scott Livingston (Vice-chair), Kristi Hartshorn, Amee Mandelin, Rachelle Walker. Other community member present was Ryan Hartshorn. We discussed the change and implementation of new school colors, new mascot, and adopting a slogan and motto for our school. It was discussed that a couple members of the PTA and community council leadership will get together and decide. This was done to help us get the students and parents excited about Vernon Elementary. We wanted to have the students feel a sense of pride and ownership in helping to decide. The funding available for the next school year 2013-2014 for School LAND Trust was also discussed. It was determined by the community council members to continue hiring an aid to work with students on reading. The aid usually helps with math also but it was determined to mainly focus on reading achievement this next year. We discussed possibly losing the current Trust LAND aid. It was decided that if that occurs, another will be hired to take her place. All members could see the benefits of the reading programs and wanted to continue helping the students meet with success.
